The DeKalb Bar Association-Trial Lawyers Section is participating in the National Seat Check that takes place across the nation on Saturday, September 25, 2010, as part of Child Passenger Safety Week. Doug Aholt, the president of the DBA-TLS, was pleased to announce earlier this year that the trial lawyers organization would be a sponsor of the SafeKids DeKalb County car seat inspection that will be held at the Nalley Super Center, 155 Church St. in Decatur. SafeKids will have trained technicians present from 11:00am until 2:00pm to inspect car seats and their installation in vehicles.
According to an article appearing in the The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday, statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that 75 percent of all car seats are improperly installed. This is a real safety problem as NHSTA data also shows that when properly installed, car seats reduce the likelihood of infants and toddlers being killed in vehicle crashes by 71% and 54% respectively. That enhanced safety protection is negated or greatly diminished by improper installation due to the confusion that can arise by there being so many types of car seats and so many types of vehicles.
NHTSA has a website at www.nhtsa.gov that provides useful information about car seats and the proper installation of said seats. Parents and child caregivers can find valuable information there to keep kids safe.
